Let's Begin...

No more waiting! I’ve got to experience my first “real” flight. This, in turn, has initiated my blogging about aviation. Consider me as a true newbie who is at the very beginning of his life in aviation, intending to share all he’ll experience, his thoughts and… who knows what’s coming up? There may be many pages to come.
Ok, here comes the first one…

I said I’ve really flown… definitely. I say “real” because, as one can guess, I actually took controls of a real airplane yesterday. It was a test flight, in which my part took 5 or 10 minutes at most. No, they don’t make beginners to become test pilots; what had been tested was me, not that Cessna (*).

Yes, it was that famous training plane, I rode it! 8) Anyway; the airline company took 18 applicants to Corlu Airport in the city of Tekirdag, which is 2 hrs. away from Istanbul. We arrived at around 09:30 A.M.; but had to wait until 01:00 PM for the fog to clear out. By that time, we first had a very simple briefing from both instructors and then got distributed among them in two or three-person groups. I and my new buddy were in the second sortie and I was the first to be tested.

Our instructor did not force any of us too much; while the other, as the rumours have it, had been slightly more demanding. We were only asked for simple turns and level flight and he seemed satisfied with each of quickly. I don't complain, that was a test not a training flight after all, but I still wished to be demanded some more maneuvers like simple climbs and descents, like the other groups were. To be honest, the action were there and I could not get enough! But still, I think my test was successful.

But how the hell I got there??

The story goes back for about eight months. Frankly, I would probably never notice if a close friend hadn’t told me about the new applicant search of a major airline company. They were searching candidates (which they call “ab initio”) to train as pilots from scratch. At that time (like many years have passed!) I did not have a great passion for flying and did not have any knowledge about aviation. Yet, I was searching for a job and, without having much hope to be chosen, being an airline pilot did not seem to be a very bad choice. Why not, I thought; a big company offering a well-paid job with fully-sponsored training, a profession respected everywhere in the world… not to mention lots of travelling. Considering my past time spent in plane simulation games on computers (though most of them being combat ones, but shhh! :) ) since my childhood, I guessed I must at least had some very basic skills through operating this kind of machines. So, I filled out the form…

… and magically, they called back! Among a couple of thousand (yes!) applicants, my height-weighth and (by just the limit) age have found to be ok. The first stage of the 9-month selection process had been passed. A small light began to shimmer.

Language (TOEIC) and phsychometric tests were on the applicants, ofcourse financially… Still not having much hope with around three thousand “competents”, I nevertheless made those spendings. After passing both two with fine grades especially in language, the company stated that they would send us to Germany for the next phase of testing. That one in Germany, was another set of psychometric tests which also included basic english, maths and physics exams. The one-day long test series, thanks to the German Aerospace Center (DLR for short), had come to a nice favour. They provided all the applicants a very detailed study package which included self-test versions of all the modules in the real test, some advisory documents and the topics to be covered in the exams.

That was the time I started to take things more serious… I mean, when I’m called for Germany. My main concern was the physics. I was very lazy in high school and 12 years had been passed since the last time I’ve opened a physics textbook. So, I took the decision of quitting (or at least pausing) my real estate job and I locked myself in home and focussed on studying. That three-and-a-half -month studying period was barely enough for my success in the tests in Germany. Fortunately, the health check asked by the company after passing the DLR test was also clean. Since I assume myself in the flight test as successful (not officially declared by the company yet), the only remaining step is the final interview. Passing it too, I’ll be in the flight academy. Fingers crossed!

What now?

Currently, I'm concentrated in reading on everything I can find about aviation, which I've been doing for the last six months. Many of the could-be applicants, I believed had a past (or at least some knowledge came from their families) in aviation somehow; so I will very possibly need to catch them up. But the more important point was, I really want to make perfect use of such a brilliant chance. In other words, I'm working to be the best!

  11. Well I've started reading your experience/tentatives a few nights ago and I've covered all of them now. How the hell did you get through all of these? It seems to be a result of hardwork, patience and effort, respectively And of course will be used for longer years, hopefully. I was not sure about being a pilot, working as an aerospace engineer but now I'm sure. I owe you a big 'thank you'

    2. I appreciate your kind words and your time to read my stuff. I've been a bit lazy to keep writing periodically, but that's my plan, actually. Being a pilot does not require so much deep knowledge or an extreme IQ. If yu have some set of basic abilities, the rest is regular studying and a bit of experience.
